Mission, Philosophy & Goals

Core Principals & Beliefs

Lying horizontal while being submerged in the water is an unnatural state for human beings.

Central to our success in swimming any stroke and Improving our performance through the water is directly related to three main items.

  1. Making a successful transition from a terrestrial human to an aquatic human. Changing our plane of reference from vertical seeing forward and moving through air, to horizontal looking down moving through water. Water is 800 times more dense that air and presents various challenges in being able to adapt successfully.

  2. Achieving comfort, balance and stability with the water.

  3. Our ability to reduce hydrodynamic friction, or drag while moving forward through the water.

Swimmers need to develop a Growth Mindset which propels them into continuous learning and skill refinement.

Breathing, or Getting Air while swimming, does not have to be a struggle between life and death. Getting Air needs to be harmonious and seamless during the stroke process.  The same can be said of Sighting in Open Water.

Adults and children learn best with fewer distractions and one on one interaction. Followed by independent work on their own behalf.

Learning strokes is different from learning to swim

Learning to be Confident, Relaxed, Comfortable,  Balanced and Streamlined in the water is fundamental to EVERY type of swim stroke, or body of water…and should not be rushed.

Swimmers are encouraged to develop their own CONNECTION WITH THE WATER.

Teaching strokes must come AFTER learning to be comfortable, balanced and streamlined in the water

New and existing swimmers will benefit from developing Mental Toughness skills.  These skills will allow the swimmer to adjust to any body of water at any time, prevent and manage anxiety / panic, while being able to adjust to and manage stressful  situations, or surprise events while in any body of water.

The pace and depth of the swimmers learning is a decision they make based upon their application of the 1st Princples during our sessions and during their individual rehearsals.

We use our coaching skills to bring optimism, purpose and enjoyment to individuals in their swimming experience.

Our approach is intended to facilitate a passion for an optimistic and thoughtful method of improvement minded swimming in our community.

Philosophy

We utilize an Eclectic and Holistic approach for our instruction.

We believe all swimmers should be mentally and physically prepared, and have a full understanding of how the human body will work most successfully while in the water.

Our philosophy works to SAFELY improve the following areas:  biomechanics, body positioning, neuro-muscular connections, physical preparation by creating stability and strength in the body core, and mental toughness.

We acknowledge the different requirements and capabilities of each swimmer. WE START WHERE YOU ARE and build upon your strengths.  We begin with an understanding of your expectations and goals and work with you to develop an approach that will be realistic toward closing the performance gap between where you are… and where you wish to be

You may prefer individual  sessions or learn with a small group of family / friends. Our group lessons intentionally have no more than four swimmers to a group, which creates a less intimidating and accelerated learning environment .

Our patience, calm and through manner are highlights of our approach to coachingWe coach in the water, and many times swim along beside you to monitor progress, not poolside from the deck. This keeps us in close communication for explaining and refining movements.

We break down, explain and demonstrate each exercise. Many exercises are presented and rehearsed on dry land before getting into the water.  Being in the water with you positions us to give direct and instantaneous feedback with signals, speech. and modern video analysis techniques, using the latest technology.

Once you learn to slip through the water with minimal drag, rather than trying to fight your way over the top of it, you’ll begin to experience the emotional and conditioning benefits of swimming, sharpening your mind and becoming a long term, enthusiastic learner. One who is looking forward to your next swim, rather than dreading it as something to endure.

Using the OODA Loop

We instruct our swimmers in the use of the OODA Loop. The OODA Loop serves to focus the swimmer on an established method to analyze performance and results.  It also serves to develop a swimmer’s ability to be a consistent, resourceful, and effective self-coach.

Goals

Promote and build our four corner stones of Comfort, Capability, Competence and Confidence during coaching sessions.

Develop a swimmer’s ability to create their own Meaningful Connection With The Water.

Develop a swimmer’s ability to be relaxed, comfortable, balanced, stable, resourceful, mentally tough, and confident in any water situation.

Build foundational skills for swimmers to be confident, proficient and versatile in the water situation of their choice.

Develop in swimmers the capacity to adopt a positive growth mindset and practice continuous improvement.

Create an environment of structured and directed focus, so students may engage in a deep and deliberate practice designed to target,  improve and harmonize their technique and performance.

Instruct swimmers in the use of the OODA Loop as a tool to analyze their effectiveness and performance.

Develop a swimmer’s ability to be a consistent, resourceful, and effective self-coach.
