What is

Mindful Swimming?

A female swimmer in a vibrant purple bathing suit harnesses her stroke in an endless pool, engaging in intense training focused on refining her swimming technique.
Coach David Guffey stands in a swim lane right beside a swimmer, closely analyzing and coaching the swimmer's stroke technique. Another swimmer is visible in the adjacent lane, adding a dynamic of shared training space.

Our Approach

Using our coaching you will experience a sensible way to build (or remodel) your stroke. Whether you desire to swim for the first time, for fitness and recreation, competition, or preparing for a channel swim. You’ll learn how to position your body to cooperate better with water and gravity, how to shape and stabilize your body to more easily slide forward, and how to move in a way that greatly lowers risk of injury and increases your strength and efficiency.

You’ll learn what to practice and how to practice. Our instruction is suitable for adult swimmers new to freestyle,  including older adults and intermediate swimmers.  Our methods are also suitable for older children with water experience. Our coaching is mature, highly skilled and encouraging, guiding your technical and mental development as a masterful swimmer.

Our philosophy is Eclectic and Holistic. We combine the latest insights and evidence-based methods from physics, physiology, and psychology to guide what we teach, how we teach, and the mindsets we form around our practice. Join us for a transformational swim training experience.

Mindful Swimming coaches the WHOLE INDIVIDUAL and creates MENTAL TOUGHNESS.  We coach the Art Of Performing Swimming Skills, and Skill Effectiveness For Performance simultaneously.

Mindful Swimming recognizes that every system in the human body is involved when a person swims, not just the muscular and cardiovascular system. We take into account the importance of the neurological / emotional, skeletal, respiratory, circulatory, nervous systems and the social environment we are immersed into.

Mindful Swimming  trains all of these systems simultaneously for complete skill development.

You may  ask, “Why use a broader instructional method ?” The answer is, because learning to swim successfully… is more than just learning the mechanics of any stroke.

Age Levels

While our primary focus is adults, we do provide technique coaching for children that have already been exposed to the water and can place their face in the water and exhale. Especially if they are interested in sharpening their technique, or adding middle distance / long distance length experiences.

We have found that kids 8 and older can benefit from our 1st PRINCIPALS and Mental Toughness Training. PARENTAL NOTICE. Parents please understand that our philosophy and methods require your active understanding, participation and effort for the training to create a lasting impact. Several of our exercises require assistance in the water during rehearsals…and you are that assistance. Your assistance may also be needed for dryland rehearsals.

Refer to our list of SERVICES for more information on children’s programming.

Swimmers

Outside Greenville are Welcome

We have many swimmers that travel to Greenville for coaching. We welcome swimmers from anywhere in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Latin America. If you are traveling from beyond the surrounding Greenville area, please, do not hesitate, to contact us so we can discuss how we might set up your coaching sessions. Greenville is a small city in some respects, but large in others. The location is close to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean is 3-4 hours away. Greenville is definitely an outdoor town with plenty of activities available, a vibrant downtown, many theater and fine art activities, and enough brew pubs and restaurants to satisfy even the most discerning palate. If travel to Greenville becomes prohibitive, then we offer a REMOTE COACHING OPTION.
