"See What Swim Coaching... Reimagined, Feels Like"

Who is Mindful Swimming LLC?

David Guffey is a Coach In Good Standing with USA Swimming, a  U.S. Paralympic Level 2 coach ( USOPC ),  a Level 3 coach with American Swim Coaches Assoc. (ASCA). David has also completed Advanced Swim Coach and High Performance training under the international swim coaches organization, Swim Mastery. In addition, he is a licensed Total Immersion (TI) swim coach provider.

Mindful Swimming LLC uses indoor and outdoor pools, open water, and a 10' x 16' x 48"  Commercial Elite Endless Pool to conduct programming.

In June 2022 we finished a nearly 2 year long construction project installing a 10' x 16' x 48" Commercial Elite Endless Pool inside a covered 28' x 32' pavilion to broaden our coaching capabilities. Once the pavilion glass doors are installed (early 2023) we will have a temperature controlled year round swim studio.  Click the button above to view an 8 minute video that chronicles the swim studio build.

In addition to the swim studio, we will maintain programming at our current operating location, the PRISMA Health Life Center at 875 Faris Rd, Greenville, S.C. The Life Center contains a 25 meter indoor / heated pool. The Life Center is an excellent instructional and training facility.

Videos detailing both facilities can be found below.

What is Mindful Swimming ?

Using our coaching you will experience a sensible way to build (or remodel) your stroke. Whether you desire to swim for the first time, for fitness and recreation, competition, or preparing for a channel swim. You’ll learn how to position your body to cooperate better with water and gravity, how to shape and stabilize your body to more easily slide forward, and how to move in a way that greatly lowers risk of injury and increases your strength and efficiency.

You’ll learn what to practice and how to practice. Our instruction is suitable for adult swimmers new to freestyle,  including older adults and intermediate swimmers.  Our methods are also suitable for older children with water experience. Our coaching is mature, highly skilled and encouraging, guiding your technical and mental development as a masterful swimmer.

Our philosophy is Eclectic and Holistic. We combine the latest insights and evidence-based methods from physics, physiology, and psychology to guide what we teach, how we teach, and the mindsets we form around our practice. Join us for a transformational swim training experience.

Mindful Swimming coaches the WHOLE INDIVIDUAL and creates MENTAL TOUGHNESS.  We coach the Art Of Performing Swimming Skills, and Skill Effectiveness For Performance simultaneously.

Mindful Swimming recognizes that every system in the human body is involved when a person swims, not just the muscular and cardiovascular system. We take into account the importance of the neurological / emotional, skeletal, respiratory, circulatory, nervous systems and the social environment we are immersed into.

Mindful Swimming  trains all of these systems simultaneously for complete skill development.

You may  ask, "Why use a broader instructional method ?" The answer is, because learning to swim successfully... is more than just learning the mechanics of any stroke.

"Step Forward - Out Of Your Comfort Zone…Expand Your Boundary"

Swimming is a wonderful physical activity to share with family and friends, to stay fit, have fun and discover new adventures. However, humans are just not built as aquatic mammals.

It's no wonder adults, and children, find learning to swim effectively so intimidating and hard. The traditional  swim teaching method, of pulling and kicking harder and faster, has not changed much over the last hundred plus years.

Don't believe me. Just watch this clip "John Wayne Teaches Swimming"  Many people still experience this kind of attitude and approach.

The research literature establishes that such an approach leads to "survival" swimming, being breathless, and inefficient form, leaving a person exhausted too soon after a short distance, and possibly even injured.

Unfortunately, many folks are left with the feeling that they are not "built" to swim, or have a sense that they lack the stamina.

Still others attempt to learn through the magical world of You Tube.  Many people are capable of learning one dimensional activities from a video. Self instruction can get us started, but is limited in it's overall effectiveness.

Keep in mind that swimming is the closest thing to perpetual motion your body will ever experience. Most often, self instruction results in limited, or frustrating experiences due to the lack of feedback.

None of this creates a sense of adventure, fun, enjoyment, or accomplishment. Nor does it build mental toughness, or the most important feeling...enthusiasm for an individual, so they look forward to their next swim.

Mindful Swimming  trains your body to create less drag through the water and teaches you how to create awareness of,  and attention to your body movements, ( Proprioception ) while developing sensory feedback from your interaction with the water. So you get a chance to feel,  see, and  hear  what swimming could be.

anyone can benefit

Our primary concern is the success of our participants. We wish for them to develop their swimming capabilities to their fullest desire, while reaching the performance and endurance levels they seek.

Mindful Swimming LLC works to build  foundational and advanced skills. Suppose you are uneasy around and reluctant to be in the water for some reason, or a retuning swimmer after an absence.

Perhaps you just feel like something is off with your stroke, when it comes to the synchronization of all the moving parts, and you're not experiencing the gains in distance or duration which you desire.

Maybe you'd like to transition to Open Water.

Or, you could be a fitness or performance swimmer who is returning after injury, or looking to improve technique, narrow your performance gap and gain yardage.

All of these examples can benefit equally from training with Mindful Swimming.
