A Personal Note About The Use of Video

I encounter adults who are uneasy about being filmed. I also speak to adults who are reluctant to have their child filmed at anytime. At MindfulSwimming LLC, I fully respect their desires. As a result, I offer the service, but it is never mandatory. I have included an opt out method as part of our registration and waiver forms.

Swimming is a sport that does not lend itself to casual observation.   I always say that the coordination of different body parts simultaneously is the closest to perpetual motion our body will achieve. So the tools of above and below water video and analysis are fundamental to understanding the “what is factors” for skill development, competence and progress.

But let me take a moment,  and explain how I believe the results from video can be best used.

Coach David Guffey stands in a pool lane, wearing a white swim cap, as he coaches a swimmer on stroke techniques, demonstrating and giving feedback.

First off, I do not video every session. Regardless of the sport, I’ve observed that the use of video can lead both, coaches and swimmers, to misinterpret results.  Most often the interpretation is created with a negative backdrop, “what is being done wrong, or what I’m doing wrong.”

So this interpretation does not include what skill is being completed well.  Speaking just for myself, I would encourage coaches and swimmers to use a more positive approach and address the corrective action (s) necessary. As in “do this” as opposed to “don’t do this.”  I believe it is essential for the coach to positively guide the swimmer through the interpretative phase of video analysis for them to receive the maximin benefit. I have heard it repeated often that…”It is easier to do a do, than it is, to do a don’t.”

Enjoy your water adventures.
